Destination Oak Tree Road tells the story of Oak Tree Road: an approximately mile-and-a-half-long bustling cultural and business district in New Jersey that stretches from Edison Township to Iselin in Woodbridge Township. The film traces what this Central Jersey area once was with its agricultural landscape in the early 19th century followed by a decline with boarded up storefronts in the 1970’s. A significant demographic transformation began when Indian immigrants began to settle on and around Oak Tree Road in the following decades.

Today, Oak Tree Road is home to some of the most prominent international names in Indian jewelry, iconic fashion houses, and a delicious variety of South Asian Dining experiences. Boasting some of the highest commercial real estate values statewide, it continues to evolve as the largest South Asian American business hub catering to not just the ethnic community, but to the general population as well.

The documentary seeks to discover why the Asian Indian community chose to settle in this area and ultimately illustrates more importantly how this evolution did not come without a price. Through first-hand accounts, from the area’s pioneers to government officials, viewers hear remarkable stories of resistance, acceptance and community. Destination Oak Tree Road illustrates the lasting positive impact this Central Jersey neighborhood has had on American culture.
